Voice Your Vote:
Voter Rights Campaign
The Voice Your Vote campaign was created to effectively combat existing and future additional voter suppression measures in the historically redlined city of Hamilton, Ohio.
Designed in collaboration with Katie McNamara and Grace Hall.
Mobilizing a city to use their voices
The background.
Introduced to the Ohio House of Representative in August 2021, Ohio House Bill 387 brought with it potential restrictions that could contribute to further voter suppression within the state. The bill would require all voters to register in person, continue to limit valid forms of ID, shorten early voting periods, add requirements for absentee voting, and put limits on mail-in ballot returns, among other restrictions.
Those traveling, the elderly, those with disabilities, college students, and many more groups could be heavily impacted by this bill. Those who live in red-lined communities, especially minority communities, continue to face barriers that affluent communities do not throughout the voting process. Many of these communities are still racially segregated and are often not given the accommodations needed to exercise their right to vote. Resources can also be scarce when election season arrives.
The process.
Our campaign's main objective was to mobilize voters to call on lawmakers to equally distribute resources and services to undeserved and disenfranchised communities. The ultimate goal was to use word-of-mouth through our target demographic, who would act as a vessel for our message. Ultimately, mobilizing constituents to reach out to their representatives and lawmakers who support House Bill 387 was the first stepping-stone goal of this project.
With a budget of $1000, our team decided to create a stationary package to deliver to houses across Hamilton–a simple and effective, but less expensive, option. Each package included a die cut transparent bag, A10 envelope, instructional card, sticker book, and letter to a senator, expressing the campaign's message in plain and understandable language. All items were branded with Voice Your Vote's logo and a QR code connecting to a website with more information.
